The Trout Man tailors tuition trips for ages 9 to 90 and teaches many senior citizens. He also introduces women to fly-casting and young children to spin-fishing. All tackle is provided. Extra time is $20 an hour. Costs do not include fishing licences. A range of accommodation from $18 to $125 a night can be arranged through the Trout Man.
Getting Started No 1:
Unsure whether you can do fly-casting. It's not so difficult. Try it on the grass for one hour, $25
Getting Started No 2: Basic fly-casting tuition and fishing on tranquil streams, two hours $40. Suitable for senior citizens and younger children. One person only.
Getting Started No 3: Three hours of fly-casting tuition and fishing $55, two people $75.
Getting Started No 4: Four hours of fly-casting tuition and fishing $75, two people $95.
Sunset/Sunrise Tuition Trip:
In popular demand. Three hours tuition and fishing till dusk and four hours at dawn $130, two people $150.
Backpackers Special: A day out around the local fishing spots $140, two people $160. A day out to the back country or the famous Tongariro River $225, two people $250.
Summer Dry Fly Tuition: Learn the ultimate form of trout fishing, the dry fly, on a back country river over two days. Approximately $300 for two people, $275 for one. Accommodation extra.
Midnight Special: Learn to fish at night, when the big fish strike. From 8pm till midnight $100, two people $120.
Where and How:
A time-saving two-hour familiarisation trip around local fishing spots for visiting anglers, learning where to go and what to use. Up to four people $45. Four hours, including the Rotorua Lakes region, $80.
An Introduction To Fly-fishing: Two or three-day tuition trips by arrangement. Learn to fly-cast with nymph, wet fly, dry fly and night fly, lake and river, plus fly-tying instruction. Two days $250, two people $270. Three days $330, two people $350.
Beginners Special: Nine hours tuition and fishing spread over three days, plus flytying instruction $150, two people $170.
Father/Son Special:
Two or three days tuition and fishing by arrangement, focusing on fly-fishing techniques, learning where to go and what to do, plus
fly-tying instruction. Two days $270, three days $350.
Mother/Daughter Discount Special: One to three days of tuition, fishing, fly-tying instruction, sightseeing, relaxing and shopping. One day $110, two days $200, three days $250.
Winter Special: Try for a trophy trout at Rotoiti, Tarawera, Okataina, Totoma or the Ohau Channel. Daytime four hours $75, two people $95. Night-time or dawn four hours $100, two people $120.
Kayak: Fishing kayak and tackle, two hours $40, half-day $55 ($150 bond required).
